Spring Cleaning Your Contracting: From Your Set-Up to Your Risk

Whether you’re a seasoned contractor or still finding your feet, a proper spring clean can help you tighten up your finances, reduce stress, and make sure you’re set up for the months ahead. Here are five areas every contractor should revisit – and how a bit of focus now can get you properly back on track.

  • Contracting info

Spring has a habit of making us take stock. Windows get opened, cupboards get cleared out, and suddenly the things we’ve been meaning to deal with all winter feel a lot harder to ignore. The same mindset is worth applying to your contracting business.

Whether you’re a seasoned contractor or still finding your feet, a proper spring clean can help you tighten up your finances, reduce stress, and make sure you’re set up for the months ahead. Here are five areas every contractor should revisit, and how a bit of focus now can get you properly back on track.

1. Spring Clean Your Set-Up

Your set-up might have been perfect when you started contracting, but things change. Rates increase, contracts evolve, and personal circumstances shift.

Now is a good time to step back and ask yourself:

  • How long do I expect to stay contracting?
  • What level of income am I earning, and is it likely to increase?
  • Do I want flexibility and control when managing my contract funds?
  • Am I thinking about pensions, investments, or longer-term plans beyond my current role?
  • Will I work with one client or multiple clients?
  • Do I need my own company to pursue other business interests, hire employees, or manage business assets?

Taking time to reflect on these questions, and making changes where needed, can save you both stress and money over the longer term.

2. Spring Clean Your Expenses (and Claim What You’re Entitled To)

One of the most common issues we see is contractors under-claiming, which often means leaving money on the table unnecessarily.

A spring review of your expenses helps you to:

  • Make sure you’re only claiming what’s genuinely allowable
  • Spot expenses you may have missed
  • Keep proper records to support every claim (using the Icon Accounting app to upload receipts as soon as you make a purchase)

Done properly, expense planning should support your contracting, not worry you. Contractors can maximise their income by understanding which business expenses they’re entitled to claim tax relief on.

If you’re unsure what applies to you, this is the moment to get clarity rather than guessing. You can access guidance through our Knowledge Hub, or speak directly with your dedicated account manager at Icon Accounting to ensure every claim is compliant and properly documented.

3. Spring Clean Your Time

Contractors are brilliant at billing hours for clients, but often far less disciplined when it comes to valuing their own time.

It’s important to set limits around how much work you take on and the hours you’re willing to work day to day. Just as importantly, clear boundaries between work and personal life are essential. Try setting defined working hours, avoiding late evenings where possible, and resisting the temptation to constantly check work emails after hours (we’re all guilty of it).

It’s also worth considering how much time you’re spending on admin. If your accountant doesn’t have streamlined processes or dedicated account manager support, you may be losing valuable hours trying to manage your contract income and obligations. Time spent chasing answers or worrying about admin is time that could be better used elsewhere.

4. Spring Clean Your Risk

Risk has a habit of creeping in quietly. A missed filing here, until suddenly it becomes a much bigger issue.

A risk-focused spring clean should include:

  • Checking upcoming tax and compliance deadlines
  • Making sure contracts and working practices still stack up, and that you have all docuemntation in place

This isn’t about being overly cautious; it’s about being prepared. When risks are understood and managed properly, they stop being a source of anxiety and become part of a controlled, professional approach to contracting.

5. Spring Clean Your Support Partners

Finally, take a step back and look at the people supporting your business.

Ask yourself whether your accountant, adviser, and other partners are:

  • Proactive rather than reactive
  • Easy to contact and clear in their advice
  • Genuinely helping you make better decisions

Your support partners should feel like an extension of your business, not another task on your to-do list. If you’re doing all the chasing or still feeling unsure, it may be time for a refresh.

Ready for a Fresh Start?

Spring cleaning your contracting business isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating clarity, reducing risk, and putting yourself in a stronger position for the rest of the year.
