Team Icon Supporting Journey of Hope Botswana

Today Icon held another coffee morning!  This time it was in aid of the charity Journey of Hope Botswana. Their aim is to educate Botswanan woman about breast cancer and its treatment. Journey of Hope want to create awareness and dispel misconceptions about breast cancer throughout the rural and isolated villages in Botswana. Due to villages being so remote, many woman would not be aware of the early detection signs of breast cancer.  Here in Ireland, there is an abundance of information and awareness on this disease plus we have easy access to doctors and consultants plus any requirement treatment.  However, not all countries are lucky enough to have these services at their disposable. The rates of breast cancer in Botswana are almost the same as in Ireland.  Therefore, it is vital that Botswanan women are exposed to the correct information to arm them with the knowledge and to allow them early access to essential treatment. The team is made up of volunteer registered doctors, nurses and paramedics who travel around rural villages on pink Vespa scooters ready to spread the word and to teach women with self-examination demonstrations plus professional examinations. Seibhéal from our Contractor Support Team initially informed us of the charity as her friend, Sacha, will be travelling around Botswana this August as part of the Journey of Hope team.  We felt compelled to help raise money as it is for such a worthy cause, plus we love cake – a lot!
